Our curriculum evolves all around the child. Experiences and learning opportunities are derived from children’s interests, abilities and spontaneous activities. The educators will then scaffold and support new learning to enable the children to extend on those interests. We also provide quiet areas and extend the indoor environment outside and vice versa. Our aim is to provide activities that develop each child’s social, emotional, lingual, physical, intellectual, social, creative and recreational potential and that are developmentally appropriate. The program seeks to foster self-esteem and confidence in children by including their own ideas into the planning and providing experiences that encourage children to negotiate and co-operate in small groups. Planned activities are also designed to reflect the multicultural and multilingual nature of our community.
Aspects of our program involves sports, crafts, cooking experiences. We have our own gym for the children to build their core, muscles and strength. We have a gardening club to encourage our "Green thumbs" to grow vegetables, harvest vegetables, care for gardens and plants. Our freshly grown vegetables are given to our parents of Terrigal School Care by the children at our market stall.
For all the children interested in building and fixing, we run a Terrigal Tinkerers program and have fully equipped work sheds and tools where children are encouraged to learn new skills as they repair old unwanted items, broken toys or recycle unwanted materials.
We also offer extra curricular activities such as tutoring, music lessons and art classes. A homework table is available for any children who wish to complete their homework here.
We believe very strongly that because our environment is our third teacher- ‘Loris Malaguzzi” Exploration is promoted and encouraged, so around our centre we have learning nooks which evoke curiosity and provocations. We encourage nature hunts, or the use our binoculars to look birds in trees or whales in the ocean.
Our multicultural area have items from around the world, celebrating cultures and traditions and our world map is utilised by the children exploring the positioning of the countries.
We only provide the healthiest option within our menus at Terrigal School Care while still maintaining tasty foods which the children enjoy eating. Our breakfasts provide a choice of low sugar cereals, wholemeal toast , fresh fruit, yoghurt cups and an egg station where the children cook their own eggs. Afternoons tea consists of platters of fresh fruit and produce from our own garden, along with a meal.
We promote active healthy lifestyles and provide families with information to make the right choices. Sports are a pivotal part of our curriculum and each day children have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities including soccer, basketball, badminton, bullrush, and hockey.
Technology is limited to learning experiences. We use the internet to research and discover new facts that can broaden our knowledge. The older children have the opportunity to join our Technology club. Where they incorporate the use of technology to enhance their learning and every day skills.
Children’s achievements are celebrated and shared. We are proud of each child’s accomplishment whether it be home, school, or in the wider community. To encourage their efforts, we have provided a Wall of Fame where children are showcased for attributes such as teamwork, kindness, sporting award, community awards or for achieving a personal goal.
Our centre promotes sustainable practices in a variety of ways; from paper free days, using recycled drinking water for the children to water our vegetable gardens, natural ventilation and lighting. Our water tank allows the children to use rain water for their play experiences. Our children have a green thumbs program where they help to care for our plants and worm farms by feeding them our food scraps and collecting the worm tea for families and for us to use on our vegetable gardens.
The children play such important role within our service that we have appointed a Student Council who represent the children and through surveys ensure that all that we plan aligns with the desires and interests of the children.
Terrigal School Care acknowledge the traditional owners of the land in which we work, learn, and live, the Darkinjung people. We pay our respect to elders past, present, and emerging.
